WHAT STARTED AS A HOBBY, BECAME A CAREER AND A DREAM COME TRUE

Bio of Rod and Chris Miyata

As a youngster, Rod collected rock specimens but it was in high school that Rod discovered a real interest in jewelry, taking several jewelry making class. At UCLA, Rod was pursuing a career in Psychology but there was something missing. Rod did graduate from UCLA with a B.A. degree in Psychology but in searching for a new path, he discovered Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America.

Chris worked in at a retail jewelry store for many years, but she felt she needed more expert knowledge so she enrolled at the GIA. As fate would have it, Chris and Rod enrolled in the same class, they both graduated with the prestigious Graduate Gemologist degree.

After graduation, Rod and Chris went different paths in the jewelry industry. Rod went into jewelry appraising, Chris went back into retail jewelry sales, armed with a gemological degree. After a while, neither felt satisfied with their direction, decided to combine their skills and knowledge and opened their dream jobs-becoming owners  of Ace of Diamonds jewelry store in West LA in 1983. The Ace of Diamonds thrived in business for over 15 years at this location, then moved to an upstairs office in Culver City for over 19 years. Now in their NEW third location still located in Culver City, they continue their pursing their passions and fulfilling their dreams.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ABOUT JEWELRY REPAIR

We know you may have many questions about your jewelry repair.
We take pride in our repair work and stand behind it. Be careful of some places that will quote a low estimate to  lure you into their place only to a bait and switch to a much higher price.
We want you to have a very satisfactory experience, being able to trust us with your precious jewelry and to do the work right.

HOW MUCH TO SIZE MY RING?

Each ring is unique, there is no one standard charge because of a variety of different factors when sizing a ring; if it's going up or down in size, the color and metal type, if there are any diamonds or gemstones that may need their setting(s) tightened, should it get loose in the sizing process.

We need to physically inspect your jewelry to give you a more accurate estimate for sizing.

[Emailing a photo, can help but it's impossible to accurately assess the work until it's physically inspected]

PLEASE NOTE-not all jewelers skills are equal, it's FAR from this because of expertise. It's not wise to shop for the lowest price since many times a very low price quote may signal someone desperate for business, not qualified to work on your jewelry or will bait you with a low quote, you go to them and they then quote you the REAL price, much higher.

We always do repairs the right way-we don't cut corners and do work that's just "good enough or cheap."

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO REPAIR MY JEWELRY?

Each repair is unique, some are very easy, others may present more challenges.
Most jewelry repairs will take 4-6 business days from start to finish.
Especially when sizing a ring down that has diamonds or gemstones on it, it may need extra work done because sometimes stones will get loose in sizing; prongs may need to be tightened which will take longer to finish.

DO YOU REPAIR SILVER JEWELRY? OR COSTUME JEWELRY?

We specialize in both Gold and Platinum manufacturing and repairs, also Sterling Silver. Keep in mind-labor costs for repairs can exceed the value of certain Sterling Silver pieces unless it's a very heavy piece, unique, rare or a treasured family heirloom. Repairing a Sterling Silver item may not always be cost effective.
In many cases we can repair broken Costume Jewelry whereas others cannot. With the advancements in laser machines, we can repair with pinpoint soldering instead of a traditional gas torch to repair costume jewelry. Keep in mind, most costume jewelry is not very expensive so the repairs costs will most likely exceed the value of the piece.

ABOUT APPRAISALS

There are many types of jewelry appraisals, the most common are:
Insurance, Estate (when someone passes), and a Fair Market Value (when you want to assess the value to sell)

WHAT KIND OF JEWELRY APPRAISALS DO YOU OFFER?

There are many different types of jewelry appraisals; the most common are-Insurance, Fair Market Value and Estate. An Insurance appraisal is a retail replacement cost evaluation to establish the price, detail the quality and safeguard you when you get jewelry insurance. Your detailed appraisal will guarantee you will get a replacement with the same type and quality in case of loss, theft or damage. A Fair Market Value appraisal is an estimate of what a piece would be exchanged between a willing buy and willing seller. An Estate appraisal is an evaluation when someone passes and a value is needed for tax purposes and or equal disbursement to the heirs.

IF you are shopping for jewelry insurance, we have the perfect insurance company to get insurance from-Jewelers Mutual. They have the best competitive rates, with the widest coverage and the easiest rapid means of getting a replacement. You have the choice of who you deal with and not have to go to a replacement center. Jewelry appraisals should be UPDATED every 3-5 years, if you have not, you're most likely under-insured! Please call us for more details if you're interested in getting the BEST personal jewelry insurance policy.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR APPRAISAL

A jewelry appraisal will contain a detailed description of the design, the metal type, a quality analysis of any diamonds and or gemstones along with a photograph and a retail replacement value. The appraisal establishes the value and characteristics if the jewelry piece were needed to be replaced because of loss, theft or damage. IF you are shopping around for an appraiser, most insurance companies require the jewelry appraiser to have at a minimum of a GIA Graduate Gemologist Degree. Do not choose a jewelry appraiser just because of a low price. If your appraiser does not have any formal education, you're mostly likely throwing your money away. Always ask the qualifications and what formal education an appraiser has completed.

HOW MUCH IS AN APPRAISAL AND CAN I WATCH YOU DO IT?

Our appraisal fee is $180 per hour with a minimum of a half hour ($90). Our fee is different than most jewelry appraisers who charge a flat fee per piece. We feel an hourly charge is more fair in pricing. Beware: It is unethical to charge  a fee based on the percentage of the appraised price. Yes, we do all work in front of you while you wait if it's not a large amount of jewelry.

IF you have a diamond with a laboratory report such as one from the  GIA or AGS, please make sure to bring it along, it is very IMPORTANT to include it with your appraisal to validate the size and quality, this  will quicken the appraisal process and thus lower the fee.
