WHAT STARTED AS A DREAM, BECAME REAL
A hobby, became a Career
It was in high school that Rod discovered an interest in jewelry, taking several jewelry making class. In college at UCLA, Rod was pursuing a career in Psychology but there was something missing. Rod did graduate from UCLA with a B.A. degree in Psychology but discovered Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica (now located in Carlsbad). Rod enrolled at the GIA and met his future wife in the same class, they both graduated with a Graduate Gemologist degree. After graduation, Rod and Chris went into different paths in the jewelry industry, Rod went into jewelry appraising, Chris went into retail jewelry sales. After a while ,neither were satisfied with their direction and decided they would combine their skills and knowledge and opened their dream jobs-the Ace of Diamonds jewelry store in West LA in 1983. The Ace of Diamonds thrived in business for over 15 years at this location, then moved to an office setting in Culver City for over 19 years. Now in their NEW third location still located in Culver City, they continue their passions, their dreams.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT APPRAISALS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT JEWELRY REPAIR
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO SIZE A RING?
Each ring is unique, there is no standard charge because of a variety of different factors when sizing a ring; if it's going up or down in size, the color and metal type, if there are any diamonds or gemstones that may need their setting(s) tightened, should it get loose in the sizing process.
We need to physically inspect your jewelry to give you a more accurate estimate for sizing.
[Messaging us with a photo, asking for a quote- it's impossible to accurately assess the work]
Please Note-not all jewelers/repair shops are equal, FAR from this. It's not wise to shop for the lowest price since many times, it's done by inexperienced, not properly trained or lazy jewelers, performing work that to the eye looks fine but inspection by an expert reveals poor workmanship or improper materials eg: using gold solder on a platinum piece, not using rose gold solder on rose gold jewelry. We always do repairs the right way-we don't cut corners and do work that's just "good enough."
DO YOU REPAIR SILVER JEWELRY?
Yes, we specialize in both Gold and Platinum manufacturing and repairs but also do Sterling Silver. Keep in mind-labor costs for repairs can exceed the value of your Sterling Silver piece unless it's a very heavy piece, unique, rare or a treasured family heirloom.
DO YOU REPAIR COSTUME JEWELRY?
Yes in many cases we can repair broken Costume Jewelry. With the advancements in laser machines, lasers can now be used to repair costume jewelry. Laser machines are very expensive but now help us to do repairs that not so long ago weren't able to fix.
WHAT KIND OF APPRAISALS DO YOU OFFER?
There are many different types of jewelry appraisals; the most common are-Insurance, Fair Market Value and Estate, when someone has passed on. An Insurance appraisal is a retail replacement cost evaluation to establish the price, detail the quality and safeguard you when you get jewelry insurance. Your detailed appraisal will guarantee you will get a replacement with the same type and quality in case of loss, theft or damage. A Fair Market Value appraisal is an estimate of what a piece would be exchanged between a willing buy and willing seller. An Estate appraisal is an evaluation when someone passes and a value is needed for tax purposes and or equal disbursement to the heirs.
IF you are shopping for jewelry insurance, we have the perfect insurance company to get insurance from-Jewelers Mutual. They have the best competitive rates, the widest coverage and the easiest rapid means of getting a replacement. You have the choice of who you deal with and not have to go to a replacement center. Please call us for more details if you're interested in getting the BEST personal jewelry insurance policy.
WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH AN APPRAISAL?
A jewelry appraisal will contain a detailed description of the design, the metal type, a quality analysis of any diamonds and or gemstones along with a photograph and a retail replacement value. The appraisal establishes the value and characteristics if the jewelry piece were needed to be replaced because of loss, theft or damage. IF you are shopping around for an appraiser, most insurance companies require the appraiser to have at a minimum of a GIA Graduate Gemologist Degree. If your appraiser does not have any formal educations, you're mostly likely throwing your money away. Always ask the qualifications and what formal education an appraiser has completed. Do not choose a jewelry appraiser just because it's a low price.
HOW MUCH DOES AN APPRAISAL COST? AND CAN YOU DO IT WHILE I WAIT?
Our appraisal fee is $150 per hour with a minimum of a half hour ($75), different than most jewelry appraisers who charge a flat fee per piece. We feel an hourly charge is more fair in pricing. Do not use an appraiser that charges a percentage of the appraised price.
ALWAYS purchase a center diamond (0.25 carats or larger) with an internationally recognized laboratory, either the G.I.A., or the A.G.S. There are MANY other laboratories with three letter acronyms who do NOT adhere to the diamond grading standards of the benchmarks of the G.I.A. Synthetic diamonds (diamonds with the same physical and optical properties made in a factory, not naturally from the Earth), are now being sold on the market, along with the imitiations such as Cubic Zirconia and Moissionite.
IF you have a diamond with a laboratory report such as one from the GIA or AGS, make sure to bring it along, it is very IMPORTANT to add it to the appraisal to substantiate the size and quality and will quicken the appraisal process and thus lower the fee. If you purchased a diamond, need quick and simple evaluation/consultation-determining if a diamond matches a diamond grading laboratory report, the verification fee will be lower, (usually $50).
Never deal with an appraiser that bases their fee on a percentage of the appraisal price-this is not an accepted industry way to determine the fee.
Keep in mind, Beware of some "appraisers" who offer appraisals at a low price who do not have the formal schooling needed to do a jewelry appraisal, getting an appraisal from them is a waste of money and you mostly likely will not have a complete full appraisal. Almost all insurance companies require an appraiser to have at least a G.I.A. Graduate Gemologist degree. Rod has TWO gemological degrees (G.I.A. and A.G.S.) and a pearls specialist certificate (C.P.A.A.). Always ask the appraiser what titles they have, being in the business a long means nothing.
Multiple hours to evaluate many pieces will have a sliding fee scale.
In most cases, when it is a simple jewelry appraisal ( a few items), it will be done in front of you, while you wait.
All appraisals must be scheduled in advance by appointment.
